The Forest of Hands and Teeth

The Forest of Hands and Feet by Carrie Ryan. Pub.Deacorte Press, 2009

If you are looking for somewhere else to go after the Twighlight series by Stephenie Myer, then this is the book to reach for.

Carrie Ryan has written a unique love story set in a post apocalypse world in which the survival of humans is a tenuous one. Humans are fenced off from the Forest of Hands and Teeth as this world is inhabited by undead zombies called the Unconsecrated who crave live humans, and whose bite will make humans one of them.

The Unconsecrated are constantly trying to break down the fences and destroy the human world.  The society that exists is a controlling one in which the truth is a hinderence.

Mary who narrates the story is of marriageable age and loves Travis who has spoken for her friend Cass. Mary in turn is wanted by Travis’s brother Harry, who she will settle for, but her real passion is for Travis who really wants Mary. The romance is as intense as it is exciting.

When the Unconsecrated break through the fence, the action starts aplenty, and thrilling it is. Mary, Travis, Cass, and Harry plus a brother, his wife, a young boy and a dog take flight from the Unconsecrated and go seeking a safe haven. Will they find one?

This chase will have you on the edge of your seat with Carrie Ryan exploiting every chase to heighten the drama and the romance so that you can’t put the book down.

One of the best novels I have read for some time and aimed at the Secondary school level although I guess those 12 year olds going on 16 will clamour for it too.
