Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney

Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney. Pub. Puffinn Books, 2009

In his father’s eyes Greg Heffley is a “wimpy kid” but me thinks he is a “chip off the old bloke”.

Greg survives family life with his older brother Rodrick and younger brother Manny using his wit and his humour. He is liable to take the easy way out, but what kid isn’t like this? and he does stupid things.

At school he does not use aggressive tactics to sort his problems although he can be mean to his best friend Rowley. Together they avoid bullies and discuss such philosophical problems as “can you throw up when you are standing on your head”?

Greg is starting to discover girls, particularly Holly Hill,  but doesn’t know how to approach them, and is still refreshingly embarrassed when he does something silly.

His father decides Greg needs toughening up and first makes him play soccer and then decides he is going to enrol him in a military academy. Greg spends the rest of the book trying to change his father’s mind.

A witty book that will appeal to reluctant readers particularly boys. The illustrations are excellent and add another dimension to the written text.

I enjoyed this story which will appeal to junior primary and intermediate students. There are at least 3 others around as well so if you want a laugh have a crack at this one.
