Fighting Ruben Wolfe by Markus Zusak

Fighting Ruben Wolfe by Markus Zusak. Pub.Scholastic, 2007

At last a book about fighting or at least boxing, even though this book was first published in 2000 and has been reprinted every year since.

Lots of boys like to read books like this one and they won’t be disappointed.

The Wolfe family comprise of  brothers Cameron, Ruben and Steve, sister Sarah, an overworked mother and a depressed unemployed father. They are living in poverty in the city of Sydney and are struggling to stay together.

Cameron and Ruben are close, they share a bedroom and fight each other with a boxing glove each in their backyard. When Ruben gets a reputation after he decks a guy who badmouthed his sister, he is sought out by a promoter who runs an illegal fightclub.

Both brothers get into the fight scene with differing fortunes, as they are different personalities.

A short novel that is superbly written, sometimes it is almost poetic. At the end of each chapter Cameron and Ruben discuss things before going to sleep or doing anything important.

Funny, deep, prophetic, perceptive and realistic. Take your pick of words that describe this novel.

Take this conversation between Cameron and Rube after Cameron has lost his fight and Ruben has smashed his opponent into oblivion. Cameron: “don’t lose your heart Rube”  Rube: “I’m not trying to lose it Cam, I’m trying to find it”

Suitable for Senior and young adult readers.
