Baa Baa Smart Sheep by Mark Sommerset. Illus. Rowan Sommerset. Pub. Dreamboats Books, 2010.

This is an International quality picture book that will have you laughing for days. Your children and your students will want you to read it to them again and again.

It was children that honoured this book by naming it Children’s choice in the NZ Post Book Awards and they were right.

Mark Sommerset’s text is quite brilliant especially the dialogue between the sheep and the turkey. It is sharp, simple and witty, the ideal package for a picture book and the ending promises more.

Sheep are not noted for their smartness or their individuality and turkeys are inquisitive but skittish. Not these two.

A pile of sheep droppings becomes a pile of smart pills and to a sheep who is a bit of a dag and a turkeywho wants to rise above his station they become an unforgettable scenario.

Rowan Sommerset’s illustrations are just brilliant. The turkey and sheep are perfect, you would think they were married.

This book is for everybody and a perfect acquisition for the school library and the home.
