Fire in the Sea by Myke Bartlett. Pub. Text Publishing, 2012.

This is an Atlantis story. A drownwd city destroyed after a fight amongst the Gods has side effects in Perth Australia.

Sadie is 16 years old, lives with her grand parents, doesn’t have a boyfriend and is bored by the hot summer weather. She sees an old man being attacked by what look like dark demons from the sea. When the old man dies she discovers he has left her all his property.

Strange. Then a handsome boy called Jake befriends her at the newly acquired property and tells her the property is his and that he is the old man in a new body. Can you believe this? Then asks her what happened to a box that was on the mantlepiece a box he says contains a demon that can give power to anyone who releases it. The box is missing and a frantic search takes place to find it, a search that is filled with mayhem, murder, gore and action aplenty.

The demon is sought by the gods and by a Drowner from the lost city called Lysandra. It seems that Jake has been hiding for centuries and the Gods and Lysandra have finally caught up with him.

The City of Perth is threatened if the box is not turned over to Lysandra and to make things interesting a Minataur is at large in Freemantle causing havoc.

Original fantasy which won Myke Bartlett the Text Prize for Young Adult and Children’s Writing for a first novel. Deservedly so.

Told in three parts it is gripping, keeps the reader involved and has a wicked sense of humour. For Intermediate and High school students.
