Zac and Mia by A.J. Betts
This book comes with a warning: “if you pick this book up, you won’t want to put it down.” That is pretty much true but it is in three parts so I stopped after each part.
Part one is Zac. He lies in hospital waiting for a bone marrow transplant to cure him of leukemia. The bone marrow comes from Germany so he envisages himself as Helga. He has marvellous support from his family and friends and has a friend, Cam, who too has cancer and is living life to the full while he is still able.
Mia moves into the room next door and plays a Lady Gaga record 20 times on the trot and loud as hell. Zac sees her from time to time. She is angry, rude and has a bad attitude. Some how they become friends. Mia has cancer in her leg and she has doubts over how people see her. A goddess before now the cancer has changed everything but not for Zac.
Part 2 is And when their relationship develops as Zac shows maturity when the odds are in his favour and Mia blasts at all around her when the odds are against her.
Part 3 is Mia rebuilding and the odds on Zac start falling.
Perceptively written with great dialogue, this novel will melt your heart. High school students and young adults.
