Vanilla Ice Cream by Bob Graham.
Edie Irvine is out in her pram with her grand parents when she is introduced to something that she will enjoy for the rest of her life. A vanilla ice cream.
Like many things in life the discovery is at the end of an amazing string of events that involve a sparrow who because of his inquisitiveness has been on a long journey.
Sparrow came from the dust of India. He was above grovelling in the dirt and tried his luck at a restaurant table, then a bag on top of a truck. The truck took him to a ship that was loading cargo for a southern journey. Sparrow hitched a ride.
On arrival he is free to fly and discovers Edie Irvine. He follows her and causes a mishap that drops a vanilla ice cream into Edie’s lap. Heaven!
Minimal text accompany Bob Graham’s water colour illustrations that are simple yet tell the story like a wordless picture book. The Indian scenes the truck journey then the split level illustrations that show the ship journey south. Finally the new world city and the ice cream.
Just fabulous. I will leave you to figure out the connections.
