I Am not a Worm by Scott Tulloch.
I Am not a Worm by Scott Tulloch. Pub. Scholastic, 2014. I have always been a fan of Scott Tulloch, his picture books are always interesting, funny, well thought out and popular with children as read-a-louds.
This title does it again. A couple of hackney phrases sit well with this tale. Firstly “if you hold your chin up you are also sticking your neck out” and “ pull your head in“.
An odious lizard with a koru like tale says to a caterpillar “hello little worm” and the caterpillar takes the bait “I am not a worm”. Neither he is but he should have let it go then because this lizard has the same cunning as the fox in the Gingerbread man.
The caterpillar duly creates his own caccoon and turns into a butterfly with the same arrogance as his former self the caterpillar. Lizard baits him again and he proudly annouces with some vigour that he is a butterfly. A tasty butterfly.
Simple dialogue, excellent illustrations first class picture book for juniors and anyone else.
