The First Case by Ulf Nilsson. Illus. Gitte Spee. Pub. Gecko Press, 2015.

first caseDetective Gordon is an old toad who likes to do what he does best: sitting around thinking eating cakes drinking tea and stamping important papers. Then someone steals squirrel’s nuts. How painful !

Squirrel loved his nuts he knew them all personally and only ate one when he was starving. In his eyes it is a heinous crime and he calls on Detective Gordon to solve the crime.

It is winter and snow lies on the ground. Toad alias Detective Gordon is not a winter creature nor can he climb the tree to investigate the crime scene. He needs an assistant and he finds one on the form of a young mouse whom he names Buffy.

Buffy is ultra keen and when her and toad are not sharing cakes and tea they are on the job. It is their first case together , will they solve it. read this delightful novel and see.

Gitte Spee’s water colur and pencil drawings are an essential part of this book. Toad’s facials are superb as is the frustration of squirrel and the youthful enthusiasm of Buffy the mouse.

A good read-a-loud for juniors and superb novel for emerging and confident readers at primary level.
