The House on the Hill by Kyle Mewburn Illus. Sarah Davies
A quality picture book for me to complete 2015.
I read this to my granddaughters and they were scared and relieved at the same time. They knew there were two children acting as ghosts heading for the haunted house on the hill because the black cat kept following them and it wouldn’t have followed ghosts.
The written text has a flow about it and uses words akin to Edgar Alan Poe such as verily and perforce. A skilled reader and narrator could really do something with this story.
The illustrations are just brilliant the dark sepia tones set the eerie scene and contrast greatly with the colourful scene when all is revealed.
I like the way the story begins with the cover and goes right through to the back cover. The eyes and the skull shrouded in the black of the night, the owls looking on and the house at the top of the hill.
This picture book is award winning stuff.
