With Matariki dazzling in our skies and the Waterview Tunnel going through in Auckland this picture book links today with the past of both  Maori and European settlement of the area around Te Auaunga me Te Wai o Rakataura – Oakley Creek and Rakataura’s Wetlands.

jennifer and her whanau move from Te atatu to Mount Albert and discover the local history of the area when the adults plant seedlings along Oakley Creek. The role of the creek as a food gathering area for maori and reference to Alberton the stately house in Mt Albert are referred to.

The star of this picture book are Hana Maihi’s illustrations  in water colours. Images of the past and present are superb. There is a map of the area from Te Atatu to Maungakiekie and reference to a tunnel under a house similar to the Waterview Tunnel of today.

The written text has translations of Maori place names and dialogue which i found particularly useful.

Valuable for local history and for community involvement in saving waterways from pollution. Can be used by a wide range of age groups from Juniors to high school.
