Short stories and poems are great way of getting children into reading particularly if they are written in simple easy to read language and hit the spot in terms of the children’s life experiences.
Bill Nagelkerke has done this with this collection of short stories and poems that have a personal and gentle feel about them. They have been told from the childhood memory, from the heart and from the imagination.
There are several stories about brothers Patrick and Pete who compete and argue but when times get tough they are batting for the same side. Likewise King Lion and his mates in the jungle contend with king lion’s wants and demands as king. Between are short poems and a bit of magic too.
Many of the stories have been published before in publications such as the NZ School Journal but it is nice to have them all together. My favourite is Elephants never Forget.
This would be a great resource for any junior school syndicate.
