southern starWish Upon A Southern Star edited by Shelley Chappell. Pub. .  2017.

Fractured fairytales or alternative fairytales are a popular literary genre particularly with primary and intermediate school children and even at a higher level. They normally appear as picture books but this publication breaks the mold in several ways.

Firstly they are short stories or poems of varying lengths, secondly they have a cultural link to Australia and New Zealand and thirdly they have been updated to modern and recent times.

There are 21 tales from 21 authors all of them under the Southern Cross and they retell versions of Rapunzel, Cinderella, the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Jack and the bean stalk and several others. My favourite is a version of the Snow Queen set in Antarctica by Philippa Werry. How many tales come out of this part of the world?

A sturdy publication that should get good usage in a school library or in the home. All the stories can be read aloud and will help children with their writing.
