The Living World by Rachel Rohloff.

living worldThe Living World by Rachel Rohloff. Pub. New Shoots Publishing Ltd, 2019.

“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement, the greatest source of visual beauty and the greatest source of intellectual interest”.

That is the motivation for this text book for schools and for parents wanting to inspire their children in the wonders of scientific investigation through play and hands-on fun.

It looks at the world of plants, animals and people how they are linked and how their worlds work. Every chapter has ideas for playing and experimenting, a list of equipment needed, a list of vocabulary and learning outcomes from the experiments.

The photographs and instructions are superb and the information compartmentalised and easy to understand. It tunes into the natural joy and inquisitive nature of children.

It is designed mainly for children of primary and intermediate age and in my opinion is one of the most valuable texts I have read in some time. I wish it had been around when I was a kid. It ends with a quote from that magnificent woman who recently toured New Zealand, Jane Goodall  “To reconnect with nature is key if we want to save the planet”

This book is released tomorrow the first day of Covid 19 level 2. Get it while you can.
