kauriThe Kauri Family by Suzy Cato & Arthur Baysting, illus. By Craig Fletcher. Pub. Scholastic, 2020.

The kauri tree is legendary in the history of New Zealand and in Maori legend. It is a very tall, slow growing tree that has been used in the building of our towns and for the gum that was beneath it’s roots.

This rhyming picture book is about the community of life that resides around this fabulous tree. The illustrations are of two kinds – the long shot and the close up. Both reveal the animals and plant life that reside beneath the kauri’s impressive structure.

Many of the plants and animals are exclusive to New Zealand like the tuatara, the kiwi, the weta and the long finned eel. There are others but you will need to read the story to find out.

Craiog Fletcher’s illustrations are impressive and right on the nail.

For juniors and pre schoolers. There is a song that can be downloaded to enhance the reading of the book.
