A Day With Dogs by Dorothee de Monfreid.

day with dogsA Day With Dogs by Dorothee de Monfreid. Pub. Gecko Press, 2016.

This is  a picture book that is meant to be pawed over if you will excuse the pun. It is about 22 breeds of dogs who you have seen before in books by the same author  (a link is at bottom of this review).

The covers are thick cardboard and the pages are double thick so they can be turned often.

It starts with a profile of the house in which the dogs live and it takes the reader from the morning bathroom activities to bed at night. In between time we have the clothes they wear, town and country environments the things they learn at school like the alphabet and numbers 1 to 11, the food they eat and everything else too.

The dogs have names and you can follow each dog as they go through the day. The illustrations are big and bold in bright colours with the detail enough to have a child looking for ages. Each item or activity is named in block letters so that words can be learned.

I can’t tell you anymore its just great so go and get it. Pre schoolers and juniors will love it.

SHHH! I’m sleeping by Dorothee de Monfreid.

SHHH I'm sleepingSHHH! I’m sleeping by Dorothee de Monfreid. Imprint Gecko press, 2015.

If you have ever suffered the inability to sleep because someone in the room is snoring their fat head off then you will empathise with this 12 page board book for juniors. It is outstanding.

Picture if you will 8 bunk beds on two walls, in the middle of the night each with a different breed of dog, then one dog starts snoring.

The lights go on, dogs start discussing the situation and as the night progresses all the other dogs end up on the one bunk listening to one dog tell a story.

By morning all the dogs are asleep on the top bunk and the snorer awakes after a great sleep and wonders where everybody is.

The dogs all have great names like Zaza, Misha and Omar and the water colour illustrations tell the story of the night in great detail. The dialogue is in speech bubbles and relates the exasperation of the others with the snoring but what can they do.

Good read aloud.

The Cake by Dorothee de Monfreid

cakeThe Cake by Dorothee de Monfreid. Gecko Press, 2014.

Everybody loves a cake. Tiger decides to bake one but it is hard to get agreement on what type of cake to bake. Monkey wants a banana cake, dog a bone cake, rabbit a carrot cake and cat a fish cake.

No surprise at that except tiger wants a chocolate cake. It’s his idea and he is the strongest animal, so he decides on a chocolate cake. I’m with tiger on this but the others think the idea and tiger too is revolting.

Tiger gets tough. The others disappear then return with a cake. Read the rest yourself.

A multi layered (no pun intended) picture book. Children can see it one way but perhaps adults will interpret it differently. Good ideas can be thrown back in your face.

Bright red and pink pages are illustrated with brightly coloured animals. Large text in white balloons.

Children will want to read it again and again.
