kiwi 1Kiwi One and Kiwi Two by Stephanie Thatcher. Pub. Scholastic, 2018.

Kiwis are nocturnal birds and Kiwi one and kiwi two have been asleep all day along with tuatara in the burrow next door.

When a beautiful night arrives they are ready for play and celebrate by waking up all the other forest animals and getting them out unceremoniously to play. At first  the pukeko, the duck, the gecko and other animals get involved but they have been up all day and are soon going to flag.

As day breaks  and kiwis one and two are ready for bed the other animals lay around like parents with a new baby who has kept them up all night.

Great illustrations that show the joy of childhood and the ordeal of parenthood with rhyming text that demands to be read aloud.

Great for pre schoolers and juniors.

The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt & Oliver Jeffers

crayons came homeThe Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt & Oliver Jeffers. Pub. HarperCollins Childrens Books, 2015.

A very appealing picture book with a great storyline and much to ponder over and discover in the illustrations.

Duncan is not very good to his crayons. He left maroon crayon on the couch and his father sat on him. Pea green hates himself a goes off to see the world. Neon red is left behind on holiday and is making his way back without knowing anything about where he is. yellow and orange have melted together  and brown has been used to draw some unspeakable things, like what a bear does in the woods.

My favourite is glow in the dark crayon who draws monsters on the wall. Children can touch them and connect with the book.

The storyline is written on post cards sent to Duncan’s house and there is much to find out on these cards. check out the post marks and the stamps.

The ending is superb. One of the best picture books of the year.
