Hello, New Zealand high resHello, New Zealand! by Megan McKean. Pub.Thames & Hudson, 2019.

It is always interesting to know how overseas visitors view New Zealand.

It opens with Kia Ora which is a great start and links our native bird the kiwi with how people know us.

It then travels from North to South showing all the natural wonders that these isles project. Northland with Tane Mahuta and 90 mile beach even though it is only 55 miles, the four main centres plus Hamilton, Napier and Rotorua in the North island. I learned that Hobbiton is a real place and that it is close to Hamilton. I thought it was nearer Wellington but I was wrong.

Across Cook Strait to Queenstown, Bluff, Invercargill and across to Rakiura. Pick the hidden six kiwis in each illustration.

Very tastefully done I thought with double page illustrations displaying the attractions of all centres. Hope the Aussies get with it and the rest of the world for that matter.

Using a TV character to promote reading to pre-schoolers is a good idea. This board book with sturdy pages can withstand tough conditions and brings the delights of NZ to the new reader.

Thomas comes with the Fat Controller on the barge Dilly to NZ. he visits 90 mile beach, Tane Mahuta, Auckland, crosses over to the South island and visits Queenstown and a rugby game in Christchurch between the All Blacks and Wallabies.

The photographic like illustrations are superb.

What a start to reading!
